Police look into drug, alcohol connection in accident

---- — Woman was hit by train on Monday

ANDERSON — Police are still investigating whether a woman had used drugs or alcohol prior to being struck by a train Monday afternoon, a police spokesman said.

April Davis, 47, was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital, but was transferred that night by medical helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, said Anderson Police Department public information officer Joel Sandefur. A condition report was not available from the hospital Thursday.

Witnesses told police that Davis was weaving in and out of the tracks for some time before being hit by the eastbound CSX train near the 1600 block of Jefferson Street about 12:45 p.m. The train operator told police he sounded the train’s horn several times. Davis apparently weaved back into the train’s path at the last second.

Davis was struck in the head by the train’s forward handrails, knocking her off the tracks. She suffered a serious head laceration, but was conscious and responsive at the site, police said.
