INGALLS — A man who reportedly was trying to commit suicide Monday night allegedly attacked two family members, including a 15-year-old.
Robert F. Johns, 41, of Ingalls faces a preliminary felony charge of domestic battery for allegedly beating his wife and biting a younger family member during a scuffle on Monday night.
According to a probable cause affidavit of the incident, police were dispatched to Johns' home in the 7800 block of Rose Lane on Monday at about 8:40 p.m. When they arrived, the woman was outside crying hysterically and had blood dripping from her lips.
According to the witnesses in the home, Johns and his wife started fighting verbally earlier in the evening, and the fight turned physical when Johns grabbed her by the hair, yanked her to the floor and started beating her. She also told police that Johns choked her. At some point, the four children in the home came to the woman's defense and tried to pull Johns off her. While one of the children, a 15-year-old girl, tried to help, Johns allegedly bit her thumb.
Johns told police that his wife had also attacked him, and that the battery was mutual. According to the affidavit, police noted that both Johns and the woman had physical signs of struggle, but the woman appeared to have attacked in a defensive manner.
According to Madison County Jail records, Johns was released from the jail on $5,000 bond at about 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
