ANDERSON — Police believe a motorist who failed to yield the right of way caused a deadly accident on Saturday afternoon.
The man who was killed, Andrew Clay Kierstead, 22, of Anderson, was operating a motorcycle heading northbound on Scatterfield Road near the Eighth Street intersection, according to Anderson Police Department Sgt. Bill Casey. A black car heading south on Scatterfield started a left turn onto eastbound Eighth Street, struck the motorcycle and sent it skidding.
Madison County Coroner Marian Dunnichay said Kierstead was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital at 3:15 p.m. The cause of death was multiple blunt force trauma.
Witnesses said medical teams performed CPR on the motorcycle driver before an ambulance took him to St. John’s. The motorcyclist was reportedly not wearing a helmet and “wasn’t moving” while the crews were working on him, according to people at the scene.
Investigative crews were called to the scene to try and piece together the accident. A block of northbound Scatterfield Road between Ninth and Eighth streets was closed for several hours as police investigated.
Casey said he didn’t have any further information on the vehicle involved in the accident or the driver.
