ANDERSON — The Anderson Police Department has six new officers on the force after a swearing-in ceremony in the mayor’s office Thursday.
Joshua Bowling, Bert Chambers, Thomas Prado, Zach Sieg, Bryan Stephens and Chaz Willis were all sworn in as police officers in front of a gathering of family and friends. The hiring of the officers brings APD manpower to 110, the budgeted number.
Mayor Kevin Smith and APD Chief Larry Crenshaw congratulated the new officers and welcomed them to the police force.
“I know this job can be hard and mentally debilitating sometimes,” Crenshaw said. “But I also know our work has meaning. If anyone lives a purpose-driven life, it is a police officer.”
The mayor noted that police officers rarely realize their impact on a community and the individual people they interact with daily.
“One person can make a huge difference in the lives of not only individuals in the city but also the city as a whole,” Smith said. “It’s a job with a great deal of responsibility.”
Smith said he and the rest of the city congratulate the new officers and wish them well on their new careers.
Willis, who just earned his criminal justice degree from Michigan State University, said he is excited to get to the police academy. He said he was glad to be done with the job search.
“It feels good,” Willis said after being sworn in. “It’s been a long process, but I’m glad it is finally over. I’ve been learning and learning, and I’m ready to get on the streets after the academy.”
The new officers all had family and friends on hand to join in the special day, but Sieg probably outdid all of them. His father, David, is already on the APD force and his great-grandmother were there to welcome another member of her family into law enforcement.
Gertie Clemons said she was extremely proud to see her great grandson take the oath in the mayor’s office.
