ALEXANDRIA — An Elwood woman who was run over by her boyfriend's vehicle Tuesday night is home and recovering.
Aleysha Jones, 19, of Elwood, suffered a broken rib and a fractured skull in the accident, which happened in the 300 block of East County Road 1100 North.
Jones was run over by a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by her boyfriend, 21-year-old Dillon Pierce of Alexandria, at about 8:30 p.m. that night. She was rushed to Community Hospital in Anderson, then later taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment. Madison County Emergency Management Agency was called out for traffic control, and the road was closed to traffic for about two hours.
Police reported alcohol was involved in the accident, but Pierce said Friday that Jones was the only one who had been drinking.
"It was totally a freak accident," Pierce said. "And I've been by her side since it happened."
According to Pierce, the events leading up to the accident happened as follows: Pierce was at work from about 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., then returned to the couple's residence on Walnut Street and found that Jones had been drinking. Pierce was unsure how Jones got the alcohol, but insisted that she cool off and stop drinking.
Jones apparently wanted to keep drinking, and the two got into an argument. Pierce admitted he said something that upset Jones, and she stormed out of the house and started walking on 1100 North. It was cold, and Pierce said he didn't want Jones out in public intoxicated, so he and a family member got into the Cavalier and drove after her.
Pierce said he caught up with Jones and was only going about 5 to 10 mph as he tried to get her to come back home. At some point, Jones lunged toward the car's driver side and she and Pierce caught each other's arms. She then lost her balance, stumbled and fell under the car.
