Man suspected of pointing gun at 2 men, impersonating police officer

ELWOOD — A man is in jail after he was accused of pulling a gun on three men in a restroom at a bar early Saturday morning.

Harold E. Farr, 60, faces charges of attempted robbery, intimidation, disorderly conduct, pointing a firearm and impersonating a police officer after the incident at Stingers Bar in the 1400 block of Main Street.

According to the probable cause affidavit of the incident, witnesses told responding police that Farr, who had been in a stall in the bar’s men’s room, walked out of the stall at about 2 a.m. and pointed a handgun at two men who were in the restroom.

Farr allegedly demanded that the men give him cocaine and threatened them with violence if they didn’t comply. The men also told police that Farr claimed to be a police officer and a retired military officer. A third man walked into the bathroom during the altercation and was also threatened by Farr, though he told police that Farr didn’t point the gun at him.

Police tracked Farr to his home in the 2000 block of South I Street about 15 minutes after the incident. Farr, who was reportedly intoxicated, allegedly told police that he was at the Silver Dollar Bar earlier at night and had pulled a knife on another man, also demanding he hand over cocaine. He also told police he didn’t know how the handgun he used at Stingers came into his possession. He told police he had been drinking at both bars.

Later in the morning, the two men Farr allegedly pointed the gun at identified Farr out of a lineup.

As of Sunday night, Farr was still housed in Madison County Jail on $20,000 bond.

Elwood Chief of Police Sam Hanna called the incident disturbing and said the department takes allegations of impersonating a police officer seriously.

“I’m proud of how my officers responded. They reacted quickly and efficiently,” Hanna said.
