Man held without bond on charges of threatening neighbor, police officer

ANDERSON — A man accused of threatening to kill a neighbor and attack a police officer was in police custody Monday.

Ryan M. Canaday, 32, of Anderson, faces charges of intimidation and resisting law enforcement in connection with the Sunday morning incident, and as of Monday evening, was still being held in the Madison County Jail without bond.

According to a probable cause affidavit of the incident, at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Canaday was firing a handgun in the backyard of his home in the 300 block of East 34th Street, which drew the attention of several neighbors. One next-door neighbor, who had children playing outside, walked around to the backyard and asked Canaday to stop firing the gun for safety. Canaday told the man he could shoot the gun wherever he wanted. As the argument escalated, Canaday allegedly began yelling, “I will kill you, boy,” at the man.

Canaday then allegedly threatened another neighbor who came around to the backyard to see what was happening. The two neighbors called police, who arrived shortly after and had to physically restrain Canaday after he tried to run.

Later, while Canaday was in a police car, he became violent, kicking the interior of the in-car cage and punching the front-seat window. He then told the officer driving the car, “If you take me to jail, I’ll come and get you,” and, “Not today, but one day you will be in a bar and won’t see me, and then I’ll get you.”

Canaday doesn’t have a history of violent felonies, but according to public record, has been convicted of operating while intoxicated twice, once in 2003 and again in 2010. He has another pending operating while intoxicated charge from an arrest in July. He has pleaded not guilty in that pending case.
