Car fire spreads to house causing $150,000 in damage

Two dogs died in blaze, chief says

PENDLETON, Ind. — A fire that apparently began in a parked car heavily damaged a home in the 6800 block of Jackson Street Thursday morning, authorities said.

According to Pendleton Fire Chief Danny Gardner, Michael Stewart arrived home from work, parked his car in the garage and was drinking coffee with his wife and daughter when they smelled smoke and called 911.

The garage was fully involved and fire had spread to the living room and kitchen of their ranch-style home by the time firefighters arrived about 9:15 a.m.

Gardner said the blaze was brought under control quickly, but not before two pet Yorkshire terriers who were in a bedroom of the home died. He estimated the damage at $150,000.

The exact cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but it apparently began in the engine compartment of Stewart's 2000 Buick, Gardner said.

Pendleton was assisted by firefighters and equipment from Anderson, Adams Township, Chesterfield, Ingalls and Lapel.

One firefighter was transported to St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital as a precaution after complaining of minor chest pain. He was later released, Gardner said.
