2 jailed in Muncie after death of Haitian girl, 5

MUNCIE — Muncie police have jailed two people on preliminary charges of neglect after a 5-year-old Haitian girl in their care died.

Muncie Police Lt. Steve Cox said the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death are “extremely suspicious.”

The names of the man and woman jailed were not immediately released by police but Cox described them as the guardians of the girl.

Deputy Delaware County Coroner James Clevenger says authorities believe the girl’s biological mother remains in Haiti.

Clevenger said the cause of death was not known and that an autopsy had been scheduled for Monday.

Clevenger says Child Protective Services has become involved in the case and that the household included other children.
