Man faces felony charges of beating woman

ELWOOD, Ind. —

Charges against a man who was arrested for allegedly using steel-toed boots to kick a woman have been upgraded to a felony.

Jonathan D. Aldridge, 32, of Elwood, is accused of battering the woman July 20 with open- and closed-hand strikes and then kicking her repeatedly when she tried to stand up after an early-morning argument. After a week of follow-up investigations and meeting with prosecutors, Elwood Police Chief Sam Hanna announced the Class A misdemeanor domestic battery would be upgraded to a Class C felony.

Hanna said investigator Scott Bertram determined the steel-toed boots, which caused major damage to the woman's abdomen, constituted a deadly weapon, and he upgraded the charge.

"We take domestic violence seriously, and we won't tolerate it," Hanna said. "We'll continue to work closely with victim's advocates and prosecutors to stop it."

According to the probable cause affidavit of the incident, Aldridge and the woman were headed home early the morning of July 20 after Aldridge had been drinking at a bar. When they arrived, an argument ensued and Aldridge soon began hitting the woman, first with an open hand, then with a closed fist, the affidavit said.

Police found spots of blood on broken blinds in the apartment, apparently consistent with the woman's claims that Aldridge hit her until she started bleeding. Police also reported the woman had large bruises covering her forearms.

At one point, the woman tried to get up, and Aldridge began to kick her in the side with his steel-toed boots. The man also allegedly kicked a dog in the ribs, sending it running into another room.

The woman was eventually able to fight off the attacks and lock herself in the bathroom. She reported to police that after Aldridge passed out, she drove to a relative's house.
