Elwood assistant coach under investigation for battery

ELWOOD, Ind. — An Elwood High School baseball coach is under investigation for touching one of his players.

Charles “Chuck” Everson, an assistant for the Panthers’ baseball team is accused of touching a player inappropriately and is under investigation for simple battery, Elwood Chief of Police Sam Hanna confirmed on Friday.

According to Hanna, the investigation has been handed off to the Howard County Sheriff’s Department. Apparently, the alleged incident with Everson and the player occurred on a road trip to Kokomo, which is why it’s being investigated in Howard County.

No representatives of the Howard County Sheriff’s Department could be reached for comment on this story.

Everson is serving as a holdover assistant coach for head baseball coach Nick Oldham, who’s in his first year coaching the Panthers. No member of Elwood’s athletic program could be reached for comment.

Elwood Interim Superintendent Tom Austin said he’s aware of the investigation, but he didn’t have enough knowledge of the situation to warrant a comment.

“I’ll probably be able to say a little more once we get back to school on Tuesday next week,” Austin said.

As of Friday evening, Everson couldn’t be reached for comment.

Everson was a candidate for an Elwood city council seat in 2007. He was defeated, receiving 459 votes, according to Herald Bulletin records.
