Police arrest man after chase ends in Pendleton

PENDLETON, Ind. — An early morning police chase ended in a manhunt after the suspect crashed his vehicle into a police car.

Pendleton Police arrested Jared Walker, 22, of Muncie, who was wanted on four warrants out of Delaware County. Delaware County officials say the warrants were for receiving stolen property, residential entry and escape charges related to a home detention.

“We have one in custody and we are trying to determine what part he played,” said Pendleton Police Chief Marc Farrer. “As far as we know, we have the suspect in custody are still investigating the accident, but no one was injured.”

Farrer said Sgt. Josh Blake was running radar on Ind. 67 at about 4:30 a.m. when he clocked a vehicle traveling 65 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone. Blake attempted to stop the car, but the driver refused to stop and increased his speed to 100 mph, Farrer said.

The police pursuit continued south on Ind. 67 from Huntsville into Pendleton, stretching across more than five miles, he said. Walker then crashed into a fence in a residential area, but before officers could apprehend him, he drove away. The police chase then continued on State Street.

“That’s when the vehicle bounced off a tree and smashed into the front end of one of our police cars driven by Officer Michael Alford,” Farrer said. “The bad guy jumped out and ran.”

Alford was not injured in the accident and officers shut down State Street in Pendleton until the accident scene could be cleared and the driver of the vehicle found.

Madison County Sheriff’s deputies, Elwood K-9, Edgewood and Ingalls police departments joined the search for the suspect.

Walker was located after officers received a report of a suspicious person in the area. State Street was reopened at approximately 6:30 a.m., Farrer said.
