No one hurt in house fire on Anderson's west side

ANDERSON, Ind. — A fire raced through a west side home Tuesday night, but no one was hurt.

In fact, nobody was home, according to Anderson Fire Department Battalion Chief Larry Towne, whose crews arrived to the home in the 800 block of West Second Street shortly after it was reported at about 5 p.m.

Neighbors and witnesses said they saw flames shooting out of the downstairs porch door and windows and called 911. Fire crews arrived and had the fire out in about a half hour, according to Towne.

Towne also confirmed that the blaze started downstairs and spread through part of the house. He said he couldn’t tell immediately if the home was a total loss. The homeowner did arrive as crews were on the scene.

Tuesday evening, investigators were heading to the home to look into possible causes. Towne indicated the cause was likely accidental.

One neighbor said she was slightly concerned because her home is right next to the house, but that firefighters responded quickly and had the blaze out in short order. She also said she believed the fire was started by a space heater.
