Quick storm causes damage throughout county

ANDERSON — A solid hour of torrential downpour brought chaos to Madison County Saturday.

An estimated 2.5 inches of rain covered the county in spots when a heavy downpour started at about 4:30 p.m. The storm was a sudden change from an otherwise sunny and warm morning and early afternoon. The downpour brought heavy winds which caused damage in several places.

A tree fell on some power lines in the 3500 block of East 200 North near Anderson, causing the road to be closed for five blocks, according to Madison County Emergency Management Agency spokesman Rodney Conner. Five power lines and power poles were brought down by the tree and power crews worked on the lines for several hours.

Another tree fell across a railroad track near 500 East and Indiana 32, causing nearby crossing lights to function improperly. The storm also knocked out power to nearly 800 homes, American Electric Power reported. Nearly 500 homes in Anderson were temporarily without power, most of them east of Indiana 9.

The rains also caused flash floods throughout the county. The intersection of Broadway and State Street in Pendleton was completely flooded after the downpour.

Conner said the public should constantly check for road updates during severe weather and avoid trouble areas as much as possible.

The chance of thunderstorms is expected to last throughout the weekend. According to the National Weather Service, there's a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday, mostly expected after 2 p.m. There's also a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms for Monday.
