Man receives 14 years on drug charges

ANDERSON, Ind. — A man who pleaded guilty to drug charges in March was sentenced Monday.

Curtis R. Stowes, 49, of Anderson, received a 14-year sentence, at least 8 to be served in prison, for two counts of dealing controlled substances, both Class B felonies, for incidents last spring. Stowes pleaded guilty to both counts on March 25 and was sentenced Monday by Madison Circuit Court 4 Judge David Happe.

Police alleged that on April 5, 2012, Stowes delivered 73 hydrocodone pills for $300 during a controlled buy. Roughly a month later on May 7, 2012, Stowes again delivered hydrocodone pills to the informant. That time the deal was 53 pills for $225, according to a probable cause affidavit. “He was selling entire prescriptions at a time, and that’s one of the major reasons we targeted him. We try to get some bigger drug dealers, and prescription drugs are a huge problem,” said an officer on the Madison County Drug Task Force unit.

The officer said the investigation of Stowes lasted about four months, but police have known about Stowes for years. He said controlled buys are a fairly typical procedure, especially in drug busts.

“Our objective in these cases is long-term investigations,” the officer said.

Stowes had just pleaded guilty to a charge of theft in March 2012, and had been sentenced to a year in the work-release program. As part of his probation, he was supposed to stay away from alcohol and illegal drugs and submit to drug tests regularly, according to public record documents.

Violating his probation and his criminal history were aggravating factors against Stowes in sentencing.
