Police track down man suspected of stealing car from gas station lot

ANDERSON — Police believe a man who was arrested on suspicion of stealing a car from a gas station parking lot Sunday was looking for heroin.

Jason E. Adams, 42, faces felony charges of possession of a syringe and auto theft — both Level 6 felonies under the new Indiana code — for his alleged connection to the incident. After his arrest, Adams reportedly told officers that he's a heroin addict and was looking for some of the drug when he took a vehicle from the parking lot of the Speedway at 2002 E. 53rd St.

According to the probable cause affidavit, the driver of a silver 2008 Kia Rondo reported the vehicle stolen about 1 p.m. The driver's grandmother had given him permission to use the car, and they were running errands in the area. The driver left the keys in the ignition and he and a friend got out of the car and went into the gas station. When they came back, the car was gone.

Officers screened surveillance footage from the gas station that reportedly showed a man matching Adams' description walking through the parking lot looking through cars, then approaching the Rondo, getting in and taking off, headed north on Scatterfield Road.

Shortly after the report, police tracked down the vehicle in the 1500 block of Ohio Avenue and arrested Adams, who was allegedly in possession of a hypodermic needle.

The driver of the vehicle reported that several gift cards were also missing from the car. Adams allegedly told police he knew nothing about the cards.

The owner of the vehicle, a Greenfield woman, said the car was returned to her Sunday. She said she wouldn't think twice about letting her grandson drive it again after the unusual incident.

"They tracked it down quickly. Thank God it was OK," the woman said. "I know [my grandson] just felt awful about it. It wasn't his fault."
