Police: Domestic violence suspect attacked officer

PENDLETON, Ind. — A suspect attacked an officer almost immediately after opening the door Friday night when the officer responded to a domestic violence call, police said.

Robert L. Russell, 57, of Pendleton, is in custody in the Madison County Jail on $20,000 bond and faces charges of resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct and three charges of battery after he allegedly tried to fight Pendleton officer Josh Blake at Russell’s home in the 800 block of South Pendleton Avenue, said Pendleton Police Chief Marc Farrer.

Farrer said Blake and officer D.J. Mockler were responding to a call from Russell’s wife and daughter that Russell was battering them. Russell, who was reported to be highly intoxicated with a blood-alcohol content of 0.26, answered a knock on his door from Blake and almost immediately started fighting, Farrer said. The officers quickly subdued Russell and arrested him.

Farrer said neither the wife nor the mother needed medical attention, but he encouraged anyone aware of a situation of domestic abuse to contact authorities before incidents like this occur.

“They pose a threat to everyone involved, my officers included,” Farrer said.
