FRANKTON, Ind. —
An Elwood man is in serious condition at an Indianapolis hospital tonight after being airlifted this morning to an Indianapolis hospital following an accident that ejected him from his vehicle.
At around 8 a.m., Kyle R. Stewart, 24, was driving a 1999 Volkswagen Beetle westbound in the 8400 block of Ind. 128, just west of Frankton.
A witness later said that Stewart’s right wheels dropped off the right shoulder and he went off the south side of the road, said Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson.
The car rolled over, ejecting Stewart. Authorities found him a short distance from the car and transported him via ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital Elwood.
Stewart was later flown by helicopter to St. Vincent in Indianapolis. Richardson said tonight that Stewart was in serious condition with a collapsed lung, fractures and a head injury.
That portion of Ind. 128 remains closed but should reopen soon. Richardson said. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Elwood EMS, Indiana State Police, Madison County Emergency Management and the Pipe Creek Fire Department all responded to the scene.
