Police: Still no suspects in rape of elderly woman

ANDERSON — Police have eliminated several persons of interest in the investigation of a rape of an elderly woman on Tuesday morning.

Detectives were still conducting interviews with neighbors, but there were no suspects as of Thursday evening, said Anderson Police spokesman Joel Sandefur.

"We're following up on some new leads, but there's not a lot of change in the investigation yet," Sandefur said.

According to the 90-year-old victim, the attack happened after midnight Tuesday in her home in the 3600 block of Hamilton Place in the Polish Acre neighborhood. The woman was hospitalized after the assault and has since been released.

According to Sandefur, the attacker broke into the woman's home, which was locked. The attacker didn't seem to be interested in anything other than sexually assaulting the woman, Sandefur said.

"That seems to have been his only motive. Nothing was stolen from the home or vandalized," Sandefur said.

After the attack, police canvassed a three-block area around the home for clues or suspects.

Sandefur reminded the public to always lock doors and secure homes each night, but he also encouraged people to look out for each other, especially if they have neighbors who are elderly or have children.
