Police arrest shooting suspect, alleged accomplice

ANDERSON, Ind. — Police believe they have the man responsible for a Thursday morning attempted robbery and shooting.

Jordan L. Freestone, an 18-year-old from Anderson, faces charges of attempted murder, attempted armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm.

Police suspect Freestone shot 52-year-old Shawn Carey of Anderson early Thursday morning during a failed robbery. Anderson Police Detective Joel Sandefur said an investigation and witness account of the incident pointed to Freestone as the shooter, and he was arrested on Friday.

Also arrested Friday was Freestone's alleged accomplice, Kyle Kress, 16. He is being charged as an adult and faces a Class A felony robbery count for his alleged role in the incident.

According to Sandefur, police responded to the incident in the area of 37th Street and Haverhill Drive about 12:30 a.m. Thursday. Medics arrived in the 3600 block of Brown Street and found Carey conscious and walking around. He was initially transported to St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital and then transferred to St. Vincent Indianapolis.

According to Carey's account to police, he was out for a walk late at night when he was approached by a white man wearing an orange hoodie. The man pointed a gun at Carey and demanded that he hand over his belongings and wallet and lie on the ground.

Carey, who was also carrying a handgun, told police he didn't want to get on the ground for fear of being shot, so he reached for his gun. The other man then shot Carey twice, and Carey fired off several rounds, as well.

According to an account from a woman who was with Freestone and Kress on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, Kress was driving the three to his home in the 3500 block of Brown Street that night.

The trio saw Carey walking down the street, and Kress told Freestone he should try to rob the man. When they parked, Freestone headed in Carey's direction. The woman said she heard gunshots shortly after, but Freestone didn't return.
