Woman faces prison trafficking charges

PENDLETON — A woman allegedly attempting to smuggle tobacco into the Pendleton Correctional Facility was arrested Friday.

Tonya Gordon, 30, of Muncie, was allegedly found with the contraband during a visit with inmate Matthew Walters, who is serving a 30-year sentence for robbery out of Marion County.

Detective Bob May, who investigated the incident, said Gordon and Walters were previously in a relationship, which explained her attempt to bring him tobacco. Gordon was transported to Madison County Jail and faces a Class A misdemeanor trafficking charge.

May said trafficking is always a problem because inmates are constantly trying to get their hands on contraband, and the State Police take these incidents very seriously. In fact, it was the second trafficking arrest made at the PCF in less than 24 hours. Former correctional officer Jeffrey Coleman admitted to trying to bring cellphones and marijuana into the prison on Thursday.

May said there was no connection between the two incidents.

According to a press release from PCF spokesman Neil Potter, Walters was placed on segregation status following the incident and is being investigated further. He has a projected release date of June 20, 2027.
