PERKINSVILLE — A girl was hit by a motorcycle, but not seriously injured, after smoke from a controlled burn limited visibility on Indiana 13 Wednesday afternoon.
Vickey Dunbar, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department deputy, said wind caused smoke to drift across the roadway reducing visibility to almost zero. She said a car slowed down due to lack of visibility and was rear-ended by an SUV.
The occupants of the SUV, who were not identified, then proceeded to climb out of the vehicle, despite the roadway still being covered with smoke. Dunbar said a motorcycle coming south on 13 then clipped one of the occupants before falling over.
“Luckily he had slowed way down,” Dunbar said. “No serious injuries, just some bumps and bruises.”
Dunbar said the farmer who was performing the burn had cleared it with the local fire department.
The accident, which occurred about 5 p.m., closed the state highway for about an hour just south of Perkinsville.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Department assisted with traffic while the highway was closed.
