ANDERSON — County officials extradited a man believed to have started a fire in June, and a juvenile suspect could be waived to adult court in connection with the crime.
Corey D. Beard Jr., 19, was booked into the Madison County Jail on Tuesday after being transported from his home in Indianapolis.
Beard faces charges of arson, theft and burglary — all felonies — and is being held on $40,000 bond. Beard is suspected of committing crimes that also involved three juveniles who have each been charged as minors, according to Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings. Prosecutors are seeking to waive one of the other teens to adult court.
According to the probable cause affidavit, on June 24, the four allegedly threw a brick through a bedroom window of a home in the 1500 block of Halford Street in Anderson. According to the affidavit, Beard allegedly admitted to the break-in. He told police that one of the smaller suspects climbed through the shattered window and unlocked the front door of the home so the others could enter.
The four teens allegedly broke into the home looking for hydrocodone. One of the minors had reportedly bought pills from the homeowner in the past. While they searched the home, one of the teens used a lighter to set clothing on fire, then set the clothing on a mattress, which also caught fire. The blaze spread and the four ran out of the home.
The case against Beard was filed in January, and a warrant for his arrest was issued Jan. 29.
