ANDERSON — A Frankton man was hospitalized after reportedly falling asleep at the wheel, causing a single-car accident on Thursday.
Hobart R. "Tip" Chandler, 78, told police he fell asleep at about noon while driving his 2006 Buick Lucerne west on County Road 600 North.
According to Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson, Chandler's car crossed the center line near the intersection with County Road 400 West, struck a utility pole and came to rest in a steep drainage ditch nearby. The pole was damaged and had to be repaired and the road was closed by Madison County Emergency Management Agency for about two hours. The accident didn't cause any outages.
Chandler, a former Frankton town council candidate and Frankton's Indiana Municipal Power Agency commissioner, was transported by ambulance to Anderson Community Hospital. He was treated for cuts to his hands and head.
According to Richardson, Chandler told police he was tired and had been visiting a family member in the hospital. Police found no signs of impairment.
