Man sent to prison after termination from drug court

ANDERSON — An Elwood man who allegedly helped a friend sell stolen property failed out of drug court and was sent to prison Monday.

George Whitis, 48, was sentenced to 10 years in the Department of Correction by Madison Circuit Court 3 Judge Thomas Newman after Whitis' drug court sentence was terminated for acquiring new charges.

Whitis pleaded guilty last year to a charge of dealing methamphetamine for an incident in February 2012. According to a probable cause affidavit, Drug Task Force officers investigating blocked purchases of pseudoephedrine, the key ingredient in meth production, found Whitis' home in the 2700 block of South B Street, Elwood, filled with precursors used to cook meth.

Whitis pleaded guilty to the charge and as part of the agreement was admitted into drug court. The agreement required him to complete the program without violations or he would be sent to prison. Court records indicate Whitis attended every drug court hearing until June 10, when he was kicked out.

Anderson police arrested Whitis on May 28 on charges of receiving stolen property and serious violent felon in possession of a firearm.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a family reported stolen items from its home on May 26. Police traced the items to Bradley Swigeart of Anderson and Whitis, who had allegedly sold a computer stolen from the home.

Police also found Whitis in possession of a stolen .22-caliber Beretta handgun, a knife, a computer bag, jewelry and coins. The family identified all the items. Swigeart was also arrested and charged with burglary, theft and unlawful possession of a firearm. He is scheduled for trial on Sept. 10.

Whitis is still scheduled to stand trial for the latest charges, with a court date of Aug. 6 in Circuit Court 3.
