Note found in restroom puts Pendleton Heights on alert

PENDLETON, Ind. — Police said they are prepared for a possible bomb threat made on Pendleton Heights High School.

According to Pendleton Police Chief Marc Farrer, a note detailing a bomb threat made on the school was found in a boys’ restroom at the high school on Tuesday. The note said the threat was for “Thursday,” but didn’t specify a date, time or any other information. The note was brought to school officials’ attention by a student.

Farrer said the Police Department will have an increased presence at the school Thursday and Friday, including bringing in a bomb-sniffing dog from the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. School Principal Mark Hall said the dog will arrive before any of the students and will be there throughout the day.

“We’re going to do everything we can to make the area safe and make sure the kids have a normal day of school,” Farrer said.

Hall said the high school, which serves about 1,200 students, and every other school in the system will continue on a normal schedule and nothing will change for students today and Friday. He said he’s unsure of the seriousness of the threat, but officials will err on the side of caution.

“Our first priority is keeping the kids safe and we’re working with the Police Department to make sure they are,” Hall said.

Farrer said there were no suspects yet, though several students have been questioned by police and school officials. Hall said he could not comment on any potential suspects who might have been identified.

“There is a pending investigation, and we don’t want to jeopardize that,” Hall said. “The thing about these situations is sometimes they take a while to review.”

Pendleton Heights, which is in the South Madison Community School Corp., will have no classes on Monday in observance of Memorial Day. The last scheduled day of school is May 30.
