ANDERSON — A man accused of firing several shots at another man through a door is in police custody.

Jerry L. Reed, 22, of the 1700 block of Arrow Avenue, faces preliminary charges of attempted murder, criminal recklessness and attempted robbery for an alleged attack on Aug. 8. Reed was arrested Thursday and as of Friday night was still incarcerated in Madison County Jail on a $35,000 bond.

According to a probable cause affidavit of the incident, the victim was in the garage of his home in the 2900 block of Pitt Street that afternoon when a man in a mask appeared in front of him, pointing a handgun and demanding money.

As the victim walked through the door of the home with the assailant behind him, he slammed the door, latched the deadbolt and ducked to the side of the door. The masked man fired several shots through the door then ran west across an open field.

A witness who heard the shots came outside and saw the suspect run away. He tried to confront the man, who had removed his mask, but the suspect wouldn’t answer and kept running.

The victim saw the suspect’s truck at a convenience store a few days later and informed police. Detectives identified the truck as Reed’s, and on Aug. 19 the eyewitness was able to immediately identify Reed in a lineup as the man he saw running through the field on Aug. 8.

Reed already has several run-ins with the law on his record. According to public records, he pleaded guilty to pointing a firearm, criminal recklessness, and carrying a handgun without a license for an incident in 2008. He later violated his suspension in connection with that conviction and served prison time.
