Coroner: Shooting victim died of excessive blood loss

No arrest yet made in Saturday homicide

ANDERSON, Ind. — The autopsy results are in, but an arrest has yet to be made in connection to a shooting fatality that occurred in the parking lot of Sonny Ray’s Bar early Saturday morning. It was the third shooting in a month in the area.

According to Madison County Coroner Marian Dunnichay, 24-year-old J’ Arius Beck, of Anderson, died from exsanguination, or excessive blood loss from a bullet wound.

She noted it was a single bullet removed from the body during the autopsy at Indiana University Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie on Sunday.

When officers arrived around 1 a.m. Saturday, they found Beck with a gunshot wound to the stomach in the bar’s parking lot at 1503 Madison Ave., said Anderson Police Department spokesman Detective Joel Sandefur.

Beck was transported to St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital where he later died.

Police identified a person of interest who came to the station but declined to answer questions, Sandefur said.

Sandefur added that a number of people were in the area when the shooting occurred, but that investigators “need somebody to step forward” with information that could help lead to an arrest.

Police say the area around Sonny Ray’s has Anderson’s second-highest crime rate.

On April 14, officers responded to another shooting in the parking lot of the bar.

According to police, Tyrone A. Smith, 26, of Indianapolis, was shot three times then. He was treated locally and later flown by a medical helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

On April 6, Orlando D. Blount, 37, of Anderson, was shot in the neck near his shoulder right outside the bar, police said at the time.

Alphonso Graves, 47, also of Anderson, was arrested on a charge of attempted murder in connection with Blount’s shooting injuries.

Saturday’s latest incident remains under investigation, Sandefur said.
