Attempted murder trial expected to wrap up

ANDERSON — The trial for a man who allegedly shot another man over drugs and then fled to southern Indiana is expected to end today.

Darius A. Hardiman, 21, is charged with attempted murder, a Class A felony, as well as lesser charges of possession of marijuana and robbery in connection with the incident on March 17 in Anderson.

The trial began Tuesday and, according to court reporters, is expected to end today after the state brings in its final witnesses.

According to police reports, Hardiman fired two gunshots at Antonio McMullen, 26, that night near the intersection of Nelle and 21st streets.

McMullen told police he had made an agreement earlier that day to sell a half-pound of marijuana for $400 to a man named Marcus Jones. The two met at Anderson Zion Baptist Church; Jones arriving with a man later alleged to be Hardiman. McMullen told police Hardiman’s presence at the deal made him uncomfortable, so they instead moved near Nelle and 21st streets.

McMullen said he passed the bag of marijuana to the two men, and while they were examining it, Hardiman suddenly pulled out a gun and shot at McMullen’s head at point-blank range. McMullen was hospitalized after the bullet grazed his head.

Jones, who later turned himself in to police, confirmed the story, but said Hardiman took a gun in McMullen’s possession to fire the shots.

Hardiman fled, and Anderson police requested help finding him from the U.S. Marshals’ Fugitive Task Force and Indiana State Police, and notifying area law enforcement on April 3 that he might be in Evansville.

April 4, police received information Hardiman was at a hotel owned by his family in Petersburg, about 50 miles north of Evansville. Over 20 officers from the Indiana State Police, Pike County Sheriff’s Office, and Petersburg and Washington police departments searched for Hardiman.
