ELWOOD, Ind. —

A two-vehicle crash in northern Madison County shut down a main highway Wednesday morning and sent three people to the hospital.

According to a press release from the Madison County Sheriff's Department, the accident happened about 6:15 a.m. near the intersection of Indiana 37 and 128, south of Elwood, and caused Indiana 37 to be shut down.

A westboound 2005 green Kia driven by Susan Knuckles, 53, of Alexandria, failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection. The vehicle collided with a northbound 2009 Ford truck driven by 28-year-old Evan Alexander of Indianapolis. Both drivers were transported to St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood with complaints of pain after the accident. A passenger in the truck, 38-year-old Chad Whistler of Pendleton, was also hospitalized with a complaint of pain.

A guardrail at the scene of the crash was heavily damaged, police said.

According to the release, the use of seat belts and airbags most likely prevented serious injuries.
