Construction worker accidentally shoots nail into leg

ANDERSON, Ind. — Rescue teams removed a construction worker from a roof after the man accidentally shot a nail into his leg with a nail gun Wednesday afternoon.

The man, identified by fellow construction workers as Brian Zech, was transported off the roof of a house in the 1400 block of Daleville Avenue. Anderson firefighters used an aerial extension from a tanker to reach Zech on the two-story home and bring him down to paramedics.

Zech watched from the roof as the team positioned the tanker and brought the extension basket to the front of the roof.

“The team is trained in high-angle rescues like this,” Battalion Chief Eric Hutchinson said.

Hutchinson said Zech wasn’t in any danger and the procedure was a safety precaution. Zech was transported by ambulance to St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital. He was released later after being treated for a minor injury.

Workers from DZ Construction were putting a new roof on the home. They had been working since Monday, and they said the injury was a freak accident.

Neighbor Tim Stires said the house was recently sold and the previous residents moved to Fort Wayne. A new homeowner from Carmel will be moving in soon and wanted the home re-roofed.

Hutchinson said he wanted to acknowledge the rescue crew who helped bring Zech down to safety. Capts. Steve Buck, Jerry Burmeister and Gary Cochran, Sgts. Chris Douglas and Tim Herb and Pvts. T.J. Brantlinger and Bob Bennett assisted in the operation.
