Muncie couple gets suspended sentences for neglect

MUNCIE, Ind. — A couple received suspended sentences for neglecting the woman’s young son and leaving him with cigarette burns, bruises and fractures.

Lauren Hachet-Scott, 32, and Jeffrey Scott, 33, both pleaded guilty to neglect for the treatment of Hachet-Scott’s 10-month-old son in 2007.

The couple was indicted by a Delaware County grand jury in August 2007 after the child’s abuse was found during treatment at the hospital.

A plea agreement between defense attorneys and the prosecutor’s office reduced the neglect charges to a Class D felony and also dropped an initial battery charge against Scott, who was not married to Hachet-Scott at the time of the child’s injuries.

Hachet-Scott was sentenced to 18 months in prison, but a judge suspended that sentence as long as she meets the terms of probation. Scott, who had prior criminal convictions, received a three-year sentence, but the judge suspended two years and put Scott on one-year home detention.

Hachet-Scott’s ex-husband, Jim Hachet, called the suspended sentences “a big joke.”

Hachet, who now has custody of the victim and his older brother, said the boy has no memory of the abuse, but that his older son is still afraid of his mother and Scott.
