House catches fire on Wayside Lane; cats missing

ANDERSON, Ind. — A house in the 3200 block of Wayside Drive caught fire Saturday evening and four cats that were being fostered at the house were missing and presumed dead.

Lynn Crosley and her son-in-law Jason Rigdon noticed flames shooting out of the house next door and ran over to help. The lady who owns the house, who was not identified, is a foster parent to stray dogs and cats and would take the animals in when the pound was filled beyond capacity. Crosley said she and Rigdon ran over to make sure the owner was OK and then tried to grab as many cats as they could.

The owner managed to get her two dogs safely out and three cats were saved, but Crosley said they couldn’t find four of the cats.

“My son-in-law just kept handing me cats,” Crosley said. “He ran back in a third time but came back out and said he couldn’t take the smoke. It was just rolling down the hallway.”

The huge cloud of thick black smoke could be seen for miles and the whole neighborhood was covered in a haze as the fire raged.

The fire originated on the second floor, but an exact cause was unclear.

Firefighters originally entered the house to fight the blaze but were soon evacuated after the roof caught fire. The fire was contained by 7:45 p.m., but the second floor was gutted and the damage reached the first floor.

“It’s such a sad story,” Crosley said. “I’m very proud of my son-in-law but we just couldn’t grab them all.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
