No one hurt, home total loss in Elwood fire

ELWOOD, Ind. — A fire consumed the home of an elderly woman Thursday night, but no one was hurt and the blaze was out within an hour.

According to police scanner transmissions, the fire started at about 8 p.m. at the two-story home at 217 N. Ninth Street.

According to Elwood Fire Chief Brad Compton, the homeowner and a friend, who were out shopping, returned to the house and saw smoke escaping from some windows. When they approached the home, flames shot out of a front upstairs bedroom window, and they called 911.

Compton said investigators believe the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction caused by a short in some bad wiring somewhere between the first-floor ceiling and the second-level floor. From there, the flames took off and consumed the house, which was ruled a total loss.

Compton said the crew working on the fire was led by Capt. Brad Stewart, and the fire was almost completely out by the time he arrived on the scene.

“They knocked it out completely,” Compton said. “They did a great job, and no one was hurt, which is the most important thing.”

Compton said the homeowner is currently staying with family members and has a strong support system in the community.
