Man faces animal fighting charges

ANDERSON, Ind. — A man accused of organizing rooster fights and raising 24 hens and roosters for fighting was released from the Madison County Jail Tuesday morning after posting bail.

Celestino Jimenez-Cortes, 23, of Anderson, faces felony charges of animal fighting for his alleged involvement in a ring of rooster fights around the city, according to a probable cause affidavit. Jimenez-Cortes was seen by police in a picture with some roosters seized by police on March 20 in a raid of Jimenez-Cortes’ home in the 3900 block of Indiana 232.

Police learned of Jimenez-Cortes’ alleged involvement from a witness who said she saw him fighting roosters for money in 2012. The witness also provided police with the picture of Jimenez-Cortes with the roosters and the location where he was keeping the animals.

In a police interview, Jimenez-Cortes admitted he allowed the roosters to fight because he wanted a picture taken for a tattoo he wanted. He said the fighting in the picture was the only time he ever had his roosters fight. He said he keeps the roosters and hens for resale and for eggs.

In a raid of Jimenez-Cortes’ home, police found 24 hens and roosters in a shed. Nine of the roosters had their comb and wattle surgically removed, a practice commonly seen in rooster fighting to avoid heavy bleeding from those areas. Eight more had injuries to their jail feathers. Most of the animals found had some form of injury or scarring.

Jimenez-Cortes faces charges of possession of an animal for fighting, using an animal in a fighting contest, and promoting an animal fighting contest. He was released on $5,000 bail, according to police records.
