State: 'Monster' preyed on victim for nearly two years

Man sentenced to 40 years in prison for child molest

ANDERSON — An Anderson man who admitted to molesting a child in his care more than 88 times over a two-year period is going to prison.

Joshua Anderson, 34, received 50 years, 40 to be served in prison, after pleading guilty on Monday to child molest, criminal deviate behavior and child molest. In addition to the accusations made by the 8-year-old victim, detectives found 51 photographs in Anderson's possession that depicted 16 different pedophilic acts.

"The victim was a beautiful little girl, and this man is a monster," said deputy prosecutor Bob Summerfield at sentencing. "The limits his mind has gone to is not appropriate for this society."

According to the probable cause affidavit of the attacks, Anderson touched the girl sexually every Friday when her mother would go to work starting when she was 6, from 2011 to early 2013. In January, she finally came forward to her father, stepmother, then mother about the abuse.

Anderson apparently was molesting the girl up until the Friday before he was arrested, when he touched her and made her watch child pornography on his cellphone. Anderson threatened to kill the girl if she ever told anyone about the abuse.

"I know I deserve punished, and I know something is very wrong with me," Anderson said while crying through the hearing. "I know the family might not forgive me, but I want them to know I'm sorry."

Madison Circuit Court 4 Judge David Happe said the aggravating factors in the case far outweighed the mitigation of Anderson's proclaimed remorse, citing the sheer number of times he attacked the victim.

"It's powerful aggravation," Happe said.

Also speaking at the hearing were the girl's mother and father, who wept as they asked the court to level the strongest sentence available for Anderson.

"My daughter has been hurt — destroyed — because somebody had no respect for a child," the victim's father said.
