Yorkie killed in house fire

ANDERSON, Ind. — Firefighters reported seeing thick smoke at least two blocks away from an Anderson home fire Saturday night that killed a dog inside.

Fire officials said the cause of the fire — which was reported a little after 8 p.m. at 4004 Haverhill Way — is under investigation.

The homeowner — Troy Dellingner — was camping with his girlfriend and family in southern Indiana and wasn’t home at the time of the fire, his father Thomas Dellingner said. About an hour after the fire, Dellingner said he still hadn’t been able to get a hold of his son or any of the others camping with him to let them know about the fire or the dog’s death.

The Teacup Yorkie — which belonged to Troy Dellingner’s girlfriend — was inside when the fire began, and firefighters found the dog dead, Dellingner said. Firefighters put out the majority of the flames quickly but continued to battle hot spots.

Dellingner was shaking, standing in the front yard of his son’s home watching firefighters work to save as much as they could.

“He just paid the house off last year,” Dellingner said. “And he just put all new carpeting throughout.”

Fire officials said it was too early to tell the extent of the damage but the master bedroom was destroyed, and there was fire damage that spread through other parts of the house.
