Police investigating Main Street slaying

Autopsy scheduled for this morning

ANDERSON, Ind. — Police are now officially conducting a murder investigation in the death of Scott C. Phillips on Thursday night.

Anderson Police Department received a call at 4:15 p.m. Thursday from one of Phillips' family members asking for a welfare check. The call came after Phillips missed a scheduled appointment.

APD spokesman Detective Joel Sandefur said upon entering the house at 4818 Main Street, police officers found Phillips dead on the floor. Phillips, 57, lived by himself.

Sandefur said it was apparent police were dealing with a homicide and the scene was "pretty traumatic."

Because of the extent of the injuries, investigators could not determine an exact cause of death at the scene and said an autopsy would be necessary before an official diagnosis could be made. The autopsy is scheduled for Saturday morning.

Police say it is too early in the investigation to determine what might have led to the slaying. Anderson police are still tracking down leads and searching for persons of interest. As of Friday night, no suspects or motives had been named.

Phillips was a former Anderson city employee who worked for the town's water pollution control department. Human Resource Director Wayne Huffman said Phillips worked for the city from 1995-2005. He could not release information regarding whether Phillips retired or was terminated from his position. It is unknown what Phillips did after leaving the city's employment.
