Teachers work hard; their hours stretch well beyond a 12-hour day during the school year. They deserve raises when their local school board decides and when their contract allows.
School administrators work hard, as well.
It should be no surprise, then, that the Anderson Community Schools board unanimously approved a total of $52,875 in raises for central office and school building administrators and administrative assistants. Indiana law now requires that pay increases be based on performance, with consideration for education levels and experience, as well.
Whether Anderson residents are satisfied with the level of education their students are receiving, the level of expertise for many of these administrators is without question.
The problem, of course, is that administrators and teachers are ... under separate agreements. Administrators typically have individual contracts; public school teachers generally work under contracts arranged by their union.
And Anderson teachers agreed that they would not reopen contracts in order to bargain their pay or benefits until December 2018. It was a valid option at the time — just two years ago — when tough economic conditions demanded teachers take a pay cut and pay more for insurance. Administrators, too, took a pay cut.
Not all administrators received automatic raises this time around. Some were deemed as needing improvement; for others, a raise was “not applicable.”
If teachers decide to reopen contract talks, and face renegotiation on some items, then it should be a thoughtful process. And that underscores the job by the school board — to find and reward administrators who are doing their jobs.
Next, let’s not forget the dedicated teachers who play such important roles in the lives of our children.
