Editorial: 3 leaders deserve superintendent status

Three local leaders in school administration are being thanked by their communities with the likelihood of extended contracts. Each is due our own thanks, too, for providing positive leadership.

The three, representing separate districts, have each familiarized themselves with local attitudes and needs for education. And each worked inside their own school systems before taking the helm.

Bobby Fields, an accessible and genial leader, graduated from Lapel High School and started as a math and physical education teacher in 1984. He has worked through the ranks becoming superintendent of Frankton-Lapel Community Schools in 2008.

For Fields, last week’s $8,000 raise was long in coming. At the time, he was making less than his predecessor. He was promised a salary bump if he received a good evaluation. He did but the raise didn’t appear. The board rectified much of that last week by passing a new three-year contract giving Buck a base salary of $120,270 annually.

South Madison Community Schools Superintendent Joe Buck’s contract is also expected to be extended at a July 24 meeting. His compensation package will be $156,353, slightly higher than it was previously.

Buck, who was previously the district’s chief financial officer, was named superintendent in September 2011. Buck helped carry the district after harsh talks about budget cuts. He’s also had to present the district’s view concerning the controversial demolition of the former high school. Citing a study, Buck made it clear that it would be least expensive to tear the building down and add classrooms to the intermediate school than to remodel the old high school.

Terry Thompson was also recently given a contract to become superintendent at Anderson Community Schools. A knowledgeable, caring educator, Thompson spent the last year as principal at Anderson High School. In the early 1990s, he was a teacher-coach in the Marion-Adams district and has since become an education leader in central Indiana. His base salary will be $131,000. Thompson, too, worked inside the system before taking the helm.
