Editorial: Make your voice heard by voting in the primary

It’s time to do your civic duty. Head out to the polls and vote in today’s primary election.

It may not seem like the most thrilling way to spend your day. Local primaries very rarely rise to the level of intrigue that accompanies a general election. But Madison County always finds a way to make even the dullest of elections interesting, and this year’s showdown in the Republican Party continues that trend.

So there’s really no excuse for registered voters to not vote today and help their party determine the candidates for Nov. 4’s general election.

Polls will open at 6 a.m., well before most of us leave for work. They’ll close at 6 p.m., giving you an hour after close of business to make it to your polling place. And you can always sneak away during your lunch break.

Need a ride? You can contact the Madison County Republican Party at 642-8074 or the Madison County Democratic Party at 642-0840 for a lift to the polls.

Just remember to bring a photo ID. Voters must present a government-issued photo ID before casting a ballot. The identification must contain an expiration date and either still be current or have expired sometime after the date of the last general or municipal election. If you are unwilling or unable to present an ID, you may cast a provisional ballot. You will then have until noon 10 days after the election to either provide the necessary documentation to the county election board or affirm one of the state’s exemptions applies to you. If you need an ID, you can get an Indiana photo ID card free of charge from any Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch – keep in mind lines might be long.

If you run into problems at your polling place, contact the Madison County clerk’s office at 641-9443. For questions about voter registration or precincts, contact the county Voter Registration office at 641-9657.
