WASHINGTON — Anderson’s Joseph Kirkpatrick bowed out of the Scripps National Spelling Bee this afternoon when he misspelled “ignimbrite.”

The word, with an origin in Latin, describes a fine-grained volcanic rock consisting mainly of welded shards of feldspar and quartz, according to dictionary.com.

Kirkpatrick, making his third appearance in the national spelling bee, said his goal was to place in the top 40. He was one of 39 spellers remaining when he stumbled on “ignimbrite.”
