ANDERSON, Ind. — The Anderson Community Schools board selected principals for the reopening of Killbuck and Southview elementary schools on Wednesday.

Only five people were in the audience for the special meeting in Anderson High School’s auditorium.

Killbuck will serve as an extension to Valley Grove and Eastside elementaries, housing the kindergarten students, while Southview will serve as a centralized location for all of ACS’ preschool children.

Stepping in at Killbuck is Anderson Elementary Principal Sharon Buchanan. Assistant Superintendent Beth Clark said Buchanan’s work with younger students in many roles, such as a reading specialist and literacy data coach, made her a good candidate.

Buchanan said she looks forward to the experience and that there’s “no way” she can’t become a kindergarten expert as the students will have her “undivided attention.”

Corye Franklin will be taking Buchanan’s place at Anderson.

Superintendent Felix Chow said Franklin made a good candidate because he’s familiar with the eight-step student performance assessment process ACS uses and is fluent in Spanish and sign language.

Anderson Elementary contains many of ACS’ English as a Second Language Learners (ESL).

At Southview, Michelle Wagner will be principal. Wagner is coming from the Metropolitan School District of Warren Township and also has a background in the eight-step process.

Clark said Wagner has done work at the Children’s Museum in Indianapolis, making her a “huge asset” in working with ACS’ youngest students.

Originally on the agenda was the possibility of a teacher termination. That was removed, however, because the personnel issue has been resolved, Chow said.
