Frankton-Lapel schools propose a nearly $31 million budget

FRANKTON — With a slight increase in students and changes in health insurance, Frankton-Lapel Community Schools is proposing a slight budget increase of nearly $31 million for 2014.

The district’s proposed budget for 2013 was $29.5 million, but it actually received about $20 million that year.

The budget was proposed during the Frankton-Lapel Community Schools’ board September meeting last week.

This year, the Health & Wellness Center is available to Frankton-Lapel employees who have health insurance through the school corporation and Treasurer Lynn Hall said the district “may have a surplus” with the changes.

“We’re hoping by the end of the year we have a surplus,” she said.

The district also saw an increase in enrollment by nearly 100 students, she added; a factor state funding is tied closely to.

Frankton-Lapel receives more transfer requests a year than it can accommodate because of capacity restraints, Hall said.

Frankton-Lapel’s proposed budget includes a general fund of $17 million and capital projects budget of $2.8 million.

Other funds, including the transportation budget, remained consistent with 2013’s.

The school board will vote on the proposed budget next month.
