School looking at Layman Life building

Anderson Christian seeking new location

ANDERSON – The Anderson Christian School is hoping to reopen at a new location in time for the start of the 2014-2015 school year.

The school has applied for a special exception and setback variances for the former Layman Life building at 1100 Broadway at the south entrance to Shadyside Memorial Park.

The school’s lease for the former Lindbergh Elementary School with Star Financial Bank expired on June 1.

“We didn’t have the option to renew,” school administrator Tom Snell said.

Snell said the former Layman Life building is one of the options the school is looking at for a new location.

“There are certain obstacles to overcome,” he said of locating at the three-story building. “We’re looking at some other sites. This is the one right now that seems most suitable to our immediate needs.”

The building contains 22,680 square feet on 1.15 acres and is listed for sale at $189,000. Aspire Indiana, based in Noblesville, is the current owner.

Snell said the building would be used for all grades from pre-kindergarten through high school.

“We don’t have an agreement with the current owner,” he said. “The owner has signed off on the request for a special exception and the variances.

“Moving forward would be contingent on the zoning for use of the building as a school,” Snell said.

The location in front of Shadyside Park makes the building attractive to the school.

Last year, Anderson Christian had an enrollment of 100 students in all grades and another 100 students in an educational program, Snell said.

‘With the transition to a new location, we’re not sure how firm the numbers will be for next year,” he said. “The quicker we can find a location the better it will be for school enrollment.”

Snell said several of the other locations being considered will require extensive and costly remodeling.
