Jazz night comes to Paramount

Pendleton Heights Jazz Ensemble to open for Sunset Stomp

ANDERSON — Paramount Theatre Centre and Ballroom will have a night of jazz soon.

Hopkins and Miller’s Sunset Stomp Jazz Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Paramount.

The performance is one of the first events for the 27th Annual City of Anderson Little 500 Festival schedule.

The Dixieland group, formed in 2010 by Robin Hopkins and Kathleen Miller, often plays jazz classics such as “Sweet Substitute,” “Atlanta Blues” and “Little Girl.”

The Pendleton Heights High School Jazz Ensemble will open for the band at 7 p.m.

Chris Taylor, Pendleton Heights Jazz Ensemble director, said the performance will give his 17 students a learning experience.

“In any music, but especially jazz, the No. 1 way to become good is to watch professionals,” he said.

Taylor said his students are very familiar with Sunset Stomp, but they’ll learn more about the group before the performance.

He said people should attend to support the arts in Madison County, support local kids and to have fun seeing a professional act.

The students will perform “Count Bubba,” Blue Bossa,” “One Note Samba,” “God Bless the Child” and “I mean you.”

They normally perform at the Paramount once a year, at the Festival of Trees, Taylor said. The venue is fantastic, he added, and opening for Sunset Stomp on Thursday is an opportunity to be part of the local music scene.

Gayle Jones Burris, executive director of the Paramount, said the theater is anticipating the two groups’ performances.

"We are excited to have Hopkins and Miller back at the Paramount, and we always enjoy welcoming young local musicians to come and be part of a great evening of music," Burris said.

Tickets for the event cost $25 for adults and $10 for students, and can be purchased at the Paramount Box Office, by calling 642-1234 or at andersonparamount.org.
