---- — ALEXANDRIA — Working with less this year, the Alexandria Community School Corp. proposed a 2014 budget of $10.5 million during the school board's September meeting.

The latest data available, 2012's expenditure's were listed as $10.7 million. The district's budget in 2013 was $11.5 million.

"We will do everything we can to balance the general fund, but will most likely be in a deficit," Business Manager Cheryl Harvey said in email correspondence.

She said the district will receive less in general fund funding while other funds should remain "fairly consistent with this year (2013's funding)."

Alexandria's proposed capital budget for 2014 is $970,00, a decrease from $1,016,985 the year prior.

The General Assembly passed a bill this year allocating more funds for K-12 education over the next two years.

But with changes in the way funds are distributed, some school districts are actually seeing a decrease in money from the state.

Harvey said the school formula calculating a district's funding was revised, lowering Alexandria's per student funding.

With a steady enrollment, that means less money for the district.

The school board will vote on the budget during next month's meeting.
