For the first time, Anderson University is offering a summer camp for high school students who are interested in learning about the field of sports marketing. Roughly paralleling their newly created marketing concentration, the Anderson University camp is intended for high school juniors and seniors who want to stay as close to the game as possible and discover the business side of the industry as well.
The camp will run from June 6-8 and is limited to a maximum of 25 attendees. During those three days, the emphasis is on gaining hands-on experience into as many different aspects of the business as possible. Students will receive behind-the-scenes access, involvement in game-day operations, and opportunities to meet and learn from executives from various sports organizations. The possibilities to be examined include: tickets sales, advertising, media buying, and game day operations. Marketing executives from the Indiana Pacers will meet with the students, as will those from the: Indianapolis Indians, Tony Stewart Foundation, and Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation.
During the camp, students will stay in dorms on campus, have access to the Wellness Center, and incur no additional expenses for meals, tours, or transportation. The tours include: Lucas Oil Stadium, Bankers Life Fieldhouse, Victory Field, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and the Tony Stewart Suite. Counselors will provide oversight and drive the vans between campus and the Indianapolis visits. While the camp is intended as a standalone experience, it can also be incorporated into a three-credit course if students are interested in investing a bit more time over the summer and paying an additional fee.
Spearheading both the camp and the class are Professor Greg Heberling and Scott Zebedis. Scott has been involved in sports marketing for most of his professional career and has worked not only with the Indians, but also with the Spartanburg Spinners, Denver Zephyrs, Denver Nuggets, San Diego Padres, and Tampa Bay Mutiny. He works with professional athletes in Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Football League (NFL), the National Hockey League (NHL), and the National Basketball Association (NBA). Not only is he a wealth of information about the profession itself, but he will also discuss appropriate protocol around professional athletes.
The cost for the camp itself is $499, thanks to generous underwriting by the Community Hospital Foundation, First Merchants, The Crossing Educational Center, and Jeanne Mudd. It is open to all high school juniors and seniors until capacity is reached.
