Split vote leads to new ACS board president

ANDERSON — A deadlocked vote Tuesday led to the election of a new Anderson Community Schools board president. Jean Chaille, 2013 ACS board president, changed her vote and board member Ben Gale was elected 2014 president.

After several votes, board members Gale and Chaille each had three votes in favor of them. Board member Irma Hampton Stewart was absent Tuesday. Members Stephanie Moran and Scott Green cast votes for Gale, and Danny McGhee and Tim Long cast votes for Chaille. Gale and Chaille voted for themselves.

Finally Chaille said, “In the spirit of moving on, I will change my vote.” Gale replied, “Thank you, Jean. I was about to do the same thing.”

Several board members made comments before the vote. Chaille mentioned the ongoing search for a new ACS superintendent. She said the board needs to decide which candidates to interview. And that process could take “through March, at least,” she said.

Gale and Chaille both said they wanted to see student grades improve at Highland Middle School and Anderson High School in the coming year.
