---- — EVANSVILLE — Baseball great Don Mattingly's southwestern Indiana hometown has dedicated a monument in the small field where Mattingly played his first game of baseball.
Mattingly visited Garvin Park's youth baseball field in Evansville on Saturday to help dedicate the monument, which includes the inscription, "It all started here."
The Evansville Courier & Press reported the former New York Yankees first baseman and current Los Angeles Dodgers manager told the crowd that gathered for the dedication that his baseball career actually got its start in neighborhood backyards.
Mattingly sparked laughter among the crowd that also gathered for the renaming of a street after Mattingly when he recalled that he always cried as a child when his mother made him leave baseball practice at the youth field to take swimming lessons.
